You Raise Me Up

Music by Rolf Løvland and lyrics by Brendan Graham of the group,  Secret Garden,  2002.
Originally recorded by Secret Garden and then various artists,  including Josh Groban and the group,  Westlife. Youtube Video by Adamfulgence.

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

There is no life – no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

Part of the overwhelming response to this song stems from the truth it speaks to our weary souls.  We all have troubles,  burdens,  lose perspective and then hope.

List the characteristics and actions of God presented in these verses,  as well as the impact this has on a person.

How have you experienced being Raised Up?

The song was originally written as an instrumental piece and titled  “Silent Story.”  Parts of the melody are based on a traditional Irish tune  (especially the opening phrase of its chorus),  the Londonderry Air,  which is best known as the usual tune to the 1910 song Danny Boy.  Løvland approached Irish novelist and songwriter Brendan Graham to write the lyrics to his melody after reading Graham’s novels.  In 2004,  the song was played more than 500,000 times on American radio.  In late 2005,  there were over 80 versions available in USA alone,  and it has become nominated for Gospel Music Awards four times,  including “Song of the Year.”
